Children of Bukit Brown

For Mr Lee Cheng Hoe, 49, and his friends, Bukit Brown was their playground. Growing up in Kheam Hock Village, a kampong on the fringes of the cemetery, they played hide-and-seek among the tombstones and raced wooden boats down a stream. They even attended the same school together. In 1981, they became sworn brothers. In 1982, the government asked them to leave because the land was slated for development. Mr Lee was among the last villagers to leave in 1989.
